‘Spirit of Kent’ is the star of Spitfire Day!

Spitfire Day LogoThe iconic flying machine from WWII, the Spitfire, is the star of a major event taking place next month in Ramsgate, just a short hop from our holiday lets in Broadstairs and Margate. Come down for an eye popping flying display from a Spitfire which is almost 80 years old – and get a taste of living history that deserves never to be forgottten.

This unique event to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the first flight of the historic Spitifire will take place on 5th March 2016.

The main attraction will be seeing the ‘Spirit of Kent’ Spitfire in the skies – flying to music and with a commentary over the loudspeaker explaining every move and the historical significance.

Also visit the Ramsgate Tunnels – where the folk of Ramsgate were kept safe from bombing raids 1939-1945. The Tunnels themselves are a top attraction and will be all the more worth seeing on this special day by the addition of extra exhibitions and traders in The Tunnels.

The sweet sound of 1940’s Music from Swing Noir and Naomi Hart with the Hotsy-Totsy Quintet will get your toes tapping.

Visit the pop up bar from Westerham Brewery, makers of “Spirit of Kent” ale, named after the actual plane performing in the afternoon.

The children will love meeting Joey the Clown and there will be also be the chance for young and old alike to get creative – drawing painting and making models – with AIRFIX*.

The highlight of the day will be a 10 minute choreographed display in the skies above Ramsgate by the “Spirit of Kent” spitfire based in Biggin Hill. The display will be accompanied by music and a commentary. This is expected to take place around 2:30 pm and will take place between the Ramsgate Tunnels site and the Harbour Wall.

*AIRFIX are kindly donating 150 spitfire models (1:48 scale) for an interactive children’s activity where they can make, paint and take home their very own aircraft. Cement, paint and paint brushes will all be provided with prizes on offer for the best designs.

LOLA AND COMPANY will also be present, this stylish 1940s style Citroen “H” van based food and drinks business serves up all the 21st Century style refreshments you could wish for (we don’t want to be eating the sparse fare they had to survive on during the war now do we?) – good coffee, a range of teas, delicious home baked goods and more. So no need to bring a picnic!

To be fair, the rest of Ramsgate Harbour are also has plenty of good places to eat and drink as well as plenty to enjoy looking at. This event will be something really special so use it as your excuse to get yourself to Ramsgate. See the Spirit of Kent flying and soak up the atmosphere of this historic occasion!

Don’t forget to also visit the wonderful Spitfire Museum too, just a short way out of town at Manston.

Visit the Spitfire Day website for more information and the chance to enter a VERY exciting competition.
