Jet Skiers welcome!
A while back we decided to fit jet ski posts at all our properties. These have proved popular – as we knew they would – with guests who like to be able to bring their own jet skis with them when staying at one of our holiday lets.
Sometimes just seeing those posts is enough to encourage guests, who haven’t jet skied before, to want to have a go at this exciting water sport. The great news is that whether you have your own jet ski or not, you can have a jet ski adventure in the waters around Thanet while you’re here.
Take a look at the map of where we’re based, zoom out a little bit and you can immediately see that we are on a peninsula, known as the Isle of Thanet, with ocean on three sides. That coastline you can see is extremely varied with many different points of interest.
There’s lots you can see on a jet ski around the coast of Thanet, that you either wouldn’t know was there from the shore, or which just looks so much more striking when you’re out on the water.
Like the famous White Cliffs of Dover, Thanet has stunning white chalk cliffs and stacks around much of the coast, often topped with a riot of colourful wild flowers above the golden sandy beaches which go on for miles.
The notorious Goodwin Sands off our coast can make things difficult for ships to navigate through these waters but for jet skiers they can offer resting spots – you might even plan to take a barbecue out there – and you can often find seals basking in the sunshine on quiet sand banks out to sea.
The extraordinary looking World War II Maunsell sea forts stand high on stilts ten miles out to sea and look like something from Dr Who, on a clear day you can sometimes glimpse them from the shore but get up close on your jet ski and marvel at their strangeness as you reflect on the military history of our country that made them a necessary part of our defences.
Jet Ski World is a RYA recognised training establishment, with jet ski / personal watercraft training available to International Competent Certificate Standard. They offer jet ski safaris which will take you to all the top sites and ensure your day is safe and enjoyable. They’re based at Palm Bay, which is situated at the Broadstairs end of Margate. As well as personal water craft launch and retrieval facilities they have a shop selling parts and accessories, fun merchandise and gift vouchers, an excellent café with a full menu, good coffee, high definition TV screens and free WIFI, also a safety ski on standby throughout the season, designated swimming area for your friends and family and super friendly service from real jet ski enthusiasts. They have an active Facebook group too that you might like to join.
Finally, if you like the sound of all there is to see in our local waters but you’re not feeling brave enough to commandeer a jet ski – take a look at some of the boat trips on offer, for example with Rib Request who operate out of Ramsgate Harbour.
