Wheels and Fins 2019
With Summer in full swing, the excitement is mounting for Wheels and Fins 2019 Kent’s very own hidden gem in the UK festival calendar. It takes place on the 7th and 8th September 2019, at the stunning Joss Bay: a 200-metre wide soft sand, blue flag bay just 90 minutes from central London. And with Beeches Holiday Lets, this festival scene doesn’t include sleepless nights on the hard ground, long queues for short showers and fast food from plastic plates. You can book your very own home from home close to the festival site? You’ll find comfy beds, a lovely bathroom and a fully equipped kitchen … a perfect base for your family or group’s festival experience.
Background
Wheels and Fins is an independent music and action sports festival. It was founded by Broadstairs brothers Dave and Dan Melmouth seven years ago and has grown year on year, now boasting an impressive range of attractions, including internationally acclaimed live acts and leading electronic DJs, alongside the best pro-skateboarders, and beach-based activities such as yoga, surfing and paddle boarding. It’s the perfect weekend for families and groups of friends: awesome entertainment, within an easy to navigate site, overlooking the ocean. This year, a particular highlight is Wheels and Fins 2019 brand-new vert ramp competition. This invite-only event will no doubt captivate, as pro-skaters take to an impressive 12.5ft vert ramp.
What’s on
This year the main stage is being curated and headlined on the Saturday by Kent’s very own Slaves. The Mercury Prize nominated local-boys-done good play swaggering punk rock, featuring incisive lyrics and bluesy riffs. Their storming live shows have won them the hearts of critics and audiences alike, with The Streets’ Mike Skinner and the Beastie Boys Mike D singing their praises. The duo have programmed the stage with a brilliant line-up of their favourite up and coming artists, including Willie J Healey and Lady Bird. It has recently been announced that Friendly Fires will be topping the bill on the Sunday. The acclaimed trio make shimmering indie pop, the perfect soundtrack to a sunset boogie. Catch them in this intimate setting, before they play massive shows at the Roundhouse in London and the Albert Hall in Manchester.
As if that wasn’t enough, Wheel and Fins have even added a Film Festival to their eclectic offer. Following an open call, they whittled down submissions from 18 countries across 5 continents. The winners will be screened across the weekend, with categories including Best Action Sports Film, Best Short Documentary and Best Mobile/Drone Film.
