Broadstairs Folk Week – 50th year Celebration!
This year sees the 50th Broadstairs Folk Week. This festival is, by a mile, the, biggest event on the Isle’s annual entertainment calendar. It’s seven days of folk music, over 500 acts – from traditional to modern and including sounds from all over the world, with associated fun and frolics, most of it highly family-friendly – though the little ones will be tucked up by the time the legendary late night Folk Week revelry gets going!
Folk Week brings a truly unique buzz to our normally quiet little seaside town. The streets are a-bustle with music fans, locals and day-trippers moving from one venue to another, all loving the music, drinking in the atmosphere and marvellling at the many street side entertainers, theatrical acts and Morris Dancing troupes that can be found on virtually every corner as well as behind practically every door!
Shindigs start in the evening of Friday 7th, with tens of acts a day to choose from. There’s a huge mix of ticketed gigs that you’ll pay to attend and free-to-view performances in the various pubs, bars, restaurants and bandstands around town. For a full listing on who’s on, where and when, visit the Folk Week website.
There are also daily musical and dancing workshops (think anything from bluegrass and blues guitar to English clog and hurdy gurdy). And there’s plenty to keep the kids entertained too, from junior workshops and creative activities to the, very jolly, daily Hobby Horse Club where the little ones can meet and play with some of the iconic Broadstairs Hooden Horses, enjoying music, dancing, magic and circus skills (11am at the bandstand in Victoria Gardens). They’ll be making and doing, dancing &and jigging for as long as they can take the pace!
It’s little wonder that at this time, accommodation becomes pretty hard to come by. The good news … we’re teeing you up early because Beeches still has availability for the duration of Folk Week (7th-14th August.) Perfectly located to be close to the action, but just set back enough for you to leave the hubbub and hullabaloo behind when you finally reach sensory overload, it’s the ideal place to lay your weary heads.
Take a look at our self catering accomodation booker form on our home page to see what we’ve got for the dates you want to come. Remember that Ramsgate and Margate are both just a short drive from Broadstairs and are worth considering too if you can’t get somewhere to stay with us in Broadstairs itself.
Broadstairs Folk Weeks runs from Friday 7th to Friday 14th August 2015.
It will be back next year, maybe think about booking early for 2016!
