Thanet – Things to Do and See
We are passionate about our part of the world and love to be able to tell visitors about the many things to do and see here that are available to them during their stay.
For a small area there is much more going on than people often expect.
Our town of Broadstairs, along with our near neighbours of Margate and Ramsgate and the surrounding villages, make up the Isle of Thanet, with 26 miles of golden sandy coast and some rather pretty countryside, all packed into the North Eastern tip of Kent. In long ago times Thanet was an actual island, separated from the mainland by the Wantsum river which ran from coast to coast, but now it is firmly connected to the rest of Kent and easily accessible by road and high speed rail links. Thanet makes for a great English seaside holiday destination.
The Isle, as Thanet is often fondly called, is packed full of things to do, from big name attractions to tucked away gems. You can get around everywhere very easily, by car, public transport or even by bike – and many places you can easily walk to from our holiday apartments. We’d like to tell you about some of our favourites, to give you a flavour of what you can expect should you choose to book a self catering holiday with us, or indeed if you just fancy a day trip to dip your toes into what Thanet has to offer….
Margate has the world class Turner Contemporary as well as recently reopened Dreamland and the mysterious Shell Grotto.
Birchington is home to the unique Victorian treasure trove that is Quex Park’s Powell-Cotton Museum. don’t miss Gallery Six where you can get hands on with the exhibits, which include stuffed crocodiles, giant spiders and all manner of items you’d never expect to get to touch anywhere else!
At Westwood, visit the Hornby Visitor Centre, it’s a must for model train enthusiasts and also includes rare Scaletrix cars and tracks – and much more – covering the full range of Hornby owned toy brands, past and present. As you may have read in one of our earlier blogs the Centre will soon move to Ramsgate seafront, so check their website before you set off if you happen to be reading this post some time after we wrote it.
At Manston go see the awe inspiring Spitfire and Hurricane Memorial Museum.
Ramsgate is famous for it’s Royal Harbour, mooch around and look at the boats, there are lots of shops and cafes to enjoy as well as the Ramsgate Tunnels attraction, the sweeping sands and much more to see and do around the town.
Broadstairs has seven sandy beaches, Crampton Tower Museum, Dickens Museum, Lilliput minigolf and a packed event calender, including Folk Week in August and the Blues Bash in February.
In short, you’re going to have a great time here and there’s no chance of getting bored! For more ideas check out Visit Thanet, or have a read of our other posts. You might like to check out our Facebook page too.
