Broadstairs, Margate & Ramsgate the perfect Holiday retreat

The three seaside towns of Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate are situated in a line around the Thanet coast on the north east tip of Kent and all are easily accessible for visitors to any one of them – just a few minutes in the car, or a good walk if you like to stretch your legs! There are also many excellent cycling routes that link the towns. This post describes the three seaside towns perfect for a family holiday.

Louisa Bay in Broadstairs, on the way to Ramsgate

Broadstairs is a traditional and bustling seaside town, with many local bars and some fantastic restaurants overlooking the sea, while if you fancy a cream tea or ice cream, you’ll be spoilt for choice.  Lillyputt’s mini golf is well worth a visit after a long day relaxing on the beach, with the adults secretly enjoying it as much as the kids!

A major event hosted by the town every August is Folk Week and its popularity sees tens of thousands of people visit at this time, transforming the area into a vibrant and animated resort. Many of the local bars have live bands and numerous associated events occur each day. More information can be found here: Broadstairs Folk Week

Another popular event is the Broadstairs Food Festival, which is the largest of its kind in the south east of England.  A celebration of eating and drinking, it is a showcase of the fantastic food, drink and hospitality that can be found here in Thanet and in Kent and the South East as a whole.

Margate has a wholly different feel to Broadstairs and has been undergoing major regeneration over the last few years.  Huge investments have been made in the local arts which culminated with the opening of the award winning Turner Contemporary Centre in April 2011.

While keeping its bucket and spade seaside appeal, with old favourites like candyfloss and fish and chips on the sweeping sands, the opening of the Turner Contemporary has now also established Margate as an arts centre.  Buzzing with cultural renaissance, particularly in the beautiful Old Town, with its galleries, quirky shops and trendy cafés, a vibrant café culture has emerged and you will often find bands from a wide range of different genres playing in many of the bars or on the piazza.  Many of the original amusement arcades along the seafront have also been refurbished and in 2015 the iconic Dreamland amusement park is reopening. .

A number of events come to Margate each year including world class beach volleyball tournaments and the Margate Soul Weekend – Kents biggest Soul, Funk and Jazz music festival.

Ramsgate has also seen massive inward investment and the seafront boasts
many new and tastefully decorated restaurants overlooking the sea. Visitor numbers have increased following the proactive management of the Ramsgate Royal Harbour and an investment in more boat moorings, which has encouraged more boats and yachts to stop in the area and offers a stunning setting for the many public events staged there throughout the year.

One key date in the town’s calendar is Ramsgate Week, an annual regatta hosted by the Royal Temple Yacht Club, widely recognised as the alternative to Cowes.

A recent and unique addition to the seafront attractions, which you won’t want to miss, is the Ramsgate Tunnels.

Westwood Cross shopping centre is situated in the middle of the 3 towns and offers shoppers all they could wish for, with a wide range of large format stores such as Marks and Spencer, Debenhams, Primark, River Island, Monsoon, Homebase and Next etc as well as Tesco Extra, Sainsburys and Asda superstores.

In addition you will also find a 10 screen Vue cinema; casino, bingo and several chain restaurants and bars including Frankie & Benny’s, Ask and Hungry Horse. Westwood Cross is well worth a day out for the whole family!
