Escape Rooms in Thanet
Visiting Thanet and looking for something different to do on your holiday? How about an adventure working your way out of one of the area’s Escape Rooms?
There are currently three high quality Escape Rooms locally to choose from. All very different and offering a unique and totally engaging experience. Since these three have all opened fairly recently more may follow. It seems to be something of a new craze and everyone we know who has tried any of them has reported back enthusiastically about how much fun it was.
The idea is that you and your group of friends or family members go into a mysterious themed room together and are presented with a series of intriguing clues that you need to solve in order to escape!
Where did escape rooms come from?
Back in the early-ish days of the new millenium there was a genre of game you could play on your PC or console called “Escape the Room” – these were popular and led on to real life escape rooms becoming a thing. Starting in Japan in 2007 they spread to Singapore in 2010 and the US in 2012. By the middle of 2015 there were nearly 3,000 escape rooms worldwide so it’s a rapidly growing phenomenon.
Where are these rooms in thanet?
Margate and Ramsgate both offer great escape room experiences – you might like to do more than one while you’re here and compare and contrast! All three get five star ratings on TripAdvisor. Everyone seems to love them all!
The Escapement
The Escapement has an Egyptian and Pirate themed room. Escape the Egyptian tomb or the brig of the pirate ship Polaris. Your imagination will be truly fired by the elaborate scenarios you find yourself in with your team.
On Polaris, for example, you’ll have to navigate using the stars to work out how to sail the ship on choppy seas through dramatic thunder and lightning storms and get back to land! The room includes genuine artefacts and items from an original 130-year-old ship that had the same name. The creators’ intention is that you will feel as though you are in the middle of a film for your hour of playing time.
Find The Escapement on the lower end of lively Northdown Road in Cliftonville – close to the treasure trove that is Scotts Furniture Mart, the mysterious Shell Grotto and popular clay studio, Clayspace.
Players here must be aged over 16.

Ctrl Alt Escape
Ctrl Alt Escape – offers technology puzzle based games without padlocks – one of the only padlock free escape rooms in the UK – and a 90 minute experience where you pay a flat rate, £70, for the room, instead of a price based on the number of players which makes it great value. A local family who are passionate about gaming and technology have created Ctrl Alt Escape and we’ve only heard good things about the experience.
Players here must be aged over 10.
So far there’s a Frankenscape room, where you and your team need to take over from the mad genius inventor, Alec Scape and his assistant Tricity, who have gone missing, to finish creating the monster who is only one who can help you escape! A new Spacescape room will be opening early this year.
Find this room on the increasingly cool and quirky Cliff Terrace by the old Lido site, out past the Winter Gardens, 2 minutes from award winning family restaurant Roost and the lovely Forts Cafe, as well as newly sprung up Margate FM which also has a friendly cafe.

Real Life Games in Ramsgate
Real Life Games is in the imposing Broad Street Hall building in the centre of Ramsgate, just round the corner from the famous Ramsgate Music Hall and the very cosy Ravensgate Arms with it’s excellent selection of ales, wines and interesting pop up food offerings. There’s a large car park just behind it there too on Staffordshire Street.
The games here are suitable for adults and children aged ten and over. Play Extinction – you’re infected and you need to solve the puzzles to safe the human species from becoming extinct! Reviewers report an absorbing experience that is challenging but not too difficult to spoil the fun.
As with the escape rooms in Margate, you can be sure of a friendly welcome at Real Life Games – the operators really love what they do and they love to share it with those who come to play.
